I couldn't get back to sleep after my 3:30am pumping session so I decided to call the PICU to check in on Peter. His nurse said he was doing well and that they had lowered his heart medicine from an 8 to a 4 and they were slowly weaning him from the medicine. He was also peeing like they want him too (Brandon's pee pee dance before bed must have helped) and he looked like he was going to get his chest closed today.
This morning Paul and I left the house early to see Peter because we weren't sure when the chest closings were going to happen (Peter's neighbor in the room also has her chest open and will getting hers closed today). We got to listen in on the rounds for Peter and from what the doctors were saying is that he's doing great. They are going to pause weaning him from the heart medicine until they close his chest, but after that will continue to wean him from that medicine. Getting weaned from a medicine is a HUGE milestone. It means his heart his healing and getting strong enough to handle the new "plumbing system"
Once the doctors finished with Peter we had to step out while they spoke about the other baby (HIPA rules) but that was only 5 minutes. Once back with Peter I went to his bed side and held his hand. Then he started to slowly move his head and open his eyes really wide. He's being sedated right now, but he knew his Mommy and Daddy were with him. We gave him tons of kisses and told him how proud we were that he was being a strong boy and getting all the rest he needs to heal.
That little Peter of ours has us wrapped around his finger. I could have stayed at his side all day with him gazing at us. He is so beautiful and completely perfect. God is really keeping a close watch on our baby boy, we could not be happier with the progress he has made so far.
So around 1:30pm we got a phone call from the surgeon that he finished closing up Peters chest and he is doing great. We took the grandparents (Paul's parents) and Brandon with us so the grandparents could meet Peter. Brandon stayed in the waiting area as we swapped places at Peters bedside (only 2 people are allowed at bedside and one has to be a parent). Paul and spoke withe doctor and he said that in a couple of hours if everything continues to stay well they will begin weaning him from the respirator (breathing machine). I'm so happy my baby keep taking all the right steps towards getting out of the PICU. Paul and I will go see him tonight and get a better update from the doctor about the next steps in PJs recovery.
On top of making multiple trips to the hospital we also still have our 1st baby to take care of. Brandon has been out of his schedule since Peter was born, he's also been fighting a head cold for a little over a week, but luckily this hasn't disturbed his sleep, it seems that he just keeps getting his morning and afternoon naps to late so he ends up in bed at 7-7:30 and then wakes up super early. We like B going to bed between 8-8:30. Well he'll get used to the schedule eventually and then when we bring Peter home the routine will be thrown out the window all over again, but I'm looking forward to that because then I don't have to leave my house for anything besides a doctor check-up.
We just got back from our night visit with Peter. He was doing fine, but for e first time I walked out so upset not because of Peter, but from the nurse in charge of him. She just had some sort of attitude with the very first question I asked, which was why do you have two patients when in the room he is in it's supposed to be a 1:1 ratio. Oh I got a mouth full from her. Paul DES robed her best when she left the room that she had no filter between her brain and her mouth. They will most likely be taking Peter completely off one of his heart medicines tonight and the paralytic he's on so that means he'll be wiggling around more, then tomorrow morning they'll look into weaning him from the respirator. But everyone hoping he has an uneventful night and as am I.
