Hotel living

Paul, Brandon and I have been living in the Hilton for 2 nights now.  Today we check out of our house with the Realtor and owner then take a cab to the Hilton airport hotel.  Then we'll head to Amsterdam one last time to see some of my friends and colleagues.  I've been blogging on my itouch, and when I get a chance to get the entries on here I'll back date them.
good news... all our loose ends are tied.  Paul successfully got the car papers and we sold the car yesterday. Now all that is left is to get on that 2pm flight to DC!!!

The MOVE

It's coming up so fast and of course we are now getting a case of the last minute bad luck.  First bad luck was the TV buyer didn't show up for 3 scheduled meetings, in my book you get 3 strikes and you're out!   But luckily Paul's boss wanted to buy our TV so she is coming to pick it up today.   The worst thing that happened was we lost our  Overschrijvingsbewijs (paper proving we own our car)  you need this to transfer over to the new owner.  So instead of today being the day we sold the car, it was the day I watch Paul freak out and search frantically for the Overschrijvingsbewijs, which he never found,  I feel horrible because I think I might have thrown it out a while back because I thought it was an expired insurance paper.

But what's done is done and now we must wait until Monday for the RDW (kind of like the DMV) to open.  I've tried to calm Paul with all the scenarios that could happen, the worst is we stay here until we get the paper.  The next is they give us a new one at the RDW office Monday or Tuesday OR Wednesday.

But for the next 42 hours I have to keep my husband from driving our car into a canal ( he said he wanted to do it just to get rid of it, he's being rather dramatic today)   I'm not sure why I'm so calm in these final days, but I think it's because I went through the moving stress when we came to Rotterdam and I've learned to expect the worse, but in the end it will all get done.
2 more nights in the house.  Then 3 nights in the Hilton.
Keep us in your prayers that all 3 of us get on the flight to DC this Thursday.  I'll be very sad if we have to stay an extra week

First Meal Vanilla Rice Cereal

Opening night meal
Starring Brandon Daniel, eating his first cereal
He's certainly getting it outside his mouth
Brandon grabbed the spoon from me, not kidding you
Post meal interview with the Bunny
Our Star loved it!
Let's do it again tomorrow!
...or I'll just eat my tray right now!

Brandon's first time in his high chair

Brandon's first time in the highchair that Opera Mommy built!

Mommy put together his high chair today because for the past week Brandon has not allowed her to eat during the day without being held. Finally I caved in and put the chair together (even though we're only 5 days away from the move). I guess babies can really tell you when they are ready for something. Another thing Brandon might be ready for is rice cereal. We're a bit concerned that he's not getting enough, especially since his weight dropped 3/4lb since Sept 1st. I'm hoping that this weight drop was just fluid loss due to that "Delft incident" last week. But we'll see how he does the next couple days. I have the rice cereal in the house just in case Daddy and Mommy want to start the big adventure!

A couple milestones in one day

I was shocked when I came back into the living room after just pouring myself a glass of OJ to see him on his belly.  I left him for under 1 minute and he went from back to belly.  I missed it.  For the past 2 weeks I've been staring at him whenever he's on the floor to make sure I don't miss these little monumental steps.  But luckily Brandon loves to repeat everything.  So the next show was after lunch.  AND I MISSED IT for the second time.  This time I was opening a letter.  Luckily I finally caught the 3rd time.  I was beginning to feel horrible to not keeping my eyes on him every second he was on the floor.  It just shows that in just 10 seconds you can miss anything.

After going from back to belly B started to squirm around on his mat like a fish out of water.  It was to cute.  (I really think we're close to him crawling)  But he already sort of crawls.  If he is laying on his back he'll arch him back and "back crawl"  He only figured this out today (which scares me because my house is not baby proofed)  for the past 4 days he's been arching his back in his chairs, stroller, crib, changing table...you name it he's trying to move off it.  So I see him back crawling and immediately starting cheering him on.  But ended it as soon as he got off the mat.  Sorry Brandon no crawling time until Mommy gets some of the dangerous electrical chords out of the way.

Another daily struggle is teething.  They only seem to bother him when he's cranky close to nap time.  I did notice that he's almost cut another tooth (I think, some days he looks like two white spots, other days it's only one)

Last but not least Brandon now sleeps about 11 hours a night!  I know this because I went to bed when he did last night.  I was just exhausted, so it was off to bed around 8:30PM.   Hopefully I'll get another full night.

Nothing makes time move slower than the wait between competition rounds to find out whether or not you have advanced.  Right now I am in that position.  Tonight the results will be announced at the theater at 10:45PM (to late for this Mama to be in Den Bosch) They'll also be announced on the web.  My voice teacher said she would try to send me an SMS (txt message) when she knows since she is working in the competition.

I thought it might be a great idea to pass the time between playing with brandon by posting a blog about our week.  I wish I could keep up with everything happening these days.  I get all these great blog ideas to write and then never post so lets hope I can get a few down in this one.

First off I have to say I have to best husband in the world.  I've been working my butt off with keeping this move organized, selling appliances, cleaning, cooking, raising Brandon, getting to the gym Mon-Fri, making the house inventory list, ect, ect, ect.  Well a week or so ago he came to me and said that since I've been working so hard and he hasn't had to lift a finger for this move he said I could treat myself to a new Louis Vuitton purse, of course there was a budget but I thought it was so sweet of him to recognize my hard work.
*I hope everyone doesn't think I get a designer purse any time I do a lot of work.  This was just a special occasion, and these over the top presents will be ending now that we are leaving Europe.

So last Tuesday Brandon and I went to Amsterdam to get some touristy items AND a trip to Louis Vuitton.  The store associates were so nice to Brandon, (I know they are paid to be nice, but I've been to many LV stores and they are not all nice) many of them were surprised how good and quiet he was.  I decided to take the bi bi out of his mouth to magnify the cuteness with some Brandon talk/ gurgling.  He did not disappoint me and charmed the whole store, even security loved him.
So after I purchased my new purse in encre we got back on the train home.  I was forced to take a slower train because I wanted to get off at a station with an elevator.  The ride was not as smooth as others, Brandon was so grumpy and made himself very vocal. I tried everything to calm him, but I made a horrible mistake.  I forgot to buy some water at the station so I could not make a bottle for him.  I knew the only way to get him calm would be a bottle or nurse.  So between The Hague and Rotterdam Central I was the lady nursing my baby on the train.  THANK goodness I still bring a blanket with me everywhere so I was able to cover up.  But I swear I was so exhausted from trying to calm Brandon that I did not care if I flashed a boob to anyone.  I completely understand the moms that say "If you don't like it then don't look."  Nursing worked like a charm.  I love being able to put him into a milk coma.  I just felt like such a knuckle head forgetting water.

Keep your fingers crossed for me.  I have to tend to a screaming baby

Opera Baby

Tripp Trapp Blue

So my search for baby furniture is not over.  I always keep my eye open for a great deal and research if what I like here is available in the USA.  This Stokke Tripp Trapphigh chair has caught my eye since the very beginning and I found a place here that had a deal to get the chair, baby seat, and table topper in one bundle deal.  In America all three of these pieces would be well over $400, I feel very proud that I found it here for 60% cheaper.

This chair can be used from 6 months until adult

Weekend update

Between singing, visitors, and getting ready for our departure from Holland there has been zero time to blog.  We'll start are update with today.

Paul took the morning off from work to take Brandon and I to the city hall to register our little guy as an expat in Rotterdam (I know we're leaving in 2 weeks but we still have to follow the rules until we leave then we can cancel the application)  When we were at the desk getting it done we found out that we did not have the official copy of his birth certificate.  We only had a copy, luckily we were in the same place we could get the official document (whew), so one day if Brandon needs the real official thing instead of his Embassy documents we have it and no one has to make a very long trip to The Netherlands to get a copy.

Monday I took Brandon for his 4 1/2 month check up.  When he turned 4 months I took him in to get weighed just for my own curiosity, he was 18.1lbs.  Well in two weeks he lost a little weight, which I'm told is normal.  he checked in at 17.9lbs and 26.5 inches.  This weight loss makes no sense to me because he is eating just as much some days more than usual.  But I guess now that he spends a lot more time on his tummy and the floor he won't be gaining as fast.  But he is perfectly healthy and was such a champ when he got his vaccinations.  Before we left the doctor printed out everything I should or might need for his new doctor in America.  After the appointment we headed to meet my Aunt Diane, cousin Carrie, and her Aunt Rose.  They came up from Paris to visit us for the weekend and before they caught their train back to Paris we were going out for lunch in Delft.  Lunch was great, Brandon was a doll, but he did make a mess of himself and I had to end up throwing out his clothes (hat, socks, onsie, pants).  It was bad, I won't go into to much detail, but just imagine a baby not pooping for 3 days and then it all happening at once.  There were not enough wipes in the world to clean it up.  I was just happy I had witness to this momentous event (yeah it was that crazy)  What made it even more difficult was the fact that there was no changing table, so I was changing him on a tiny counter top with a sink hole. It's funny what you can make work when your baby NEEDS to be changed. Brandon was not a happy camper until he got his new change of clothes, after that all was good.

While we were just walking around the square window shopping we went into a Delft Blue store and Brandon started his vocalizing.  The store clerk said "One day he'll be an opera singer" she did not know I am one.  I was grinning that someone else has recognized his vocalizing.  He's definitely going to have a big voice one day!

Sunday we had WCC friend who is living in Dormond, Germany come over for lunch with her boyfriend.  It was great to catch up and also find out that we plan on auditioning for a lot of the same opera programs and companies in the fall.  I'm sure we'll bump into each other at auditions.

Saturday I was singing in a little festival outside of Rotterdam with some of the studio colleagues.  It was a beautiful sunny day, perfect for outdoor singing.  I even got some sunburn.  My Aunt and Cousin arrived from Paris and made it to the last performance block just in time!  It was great to have some family see me sing live rather than just on youtube! After the performance we went back to our house, had some tea and cookies while Brandon played with everyone!  Then we had some great Thai food at a restaurant next to our house.  Brandon was so good.  They sat us next to the door which I thought would bother him, but he fell asleep the moment we parked the stroller and stayed asleep until the last 30 minutes of dinner.  I'm pretty sure the restaurant staff loved him, at the end of the night the manager gave him a red heart lollipop for being so good.  But he said Daddy could eat it for him.

I'm so happy to have the rest of today to get Brandon back into a routine.  This past week has been an un-fun week of teething and a growth spurt too.  We're trying to get him to sleep through the night again, but everyday it seems to be something new that makes him wake up in the middle of the night.  Keep your fingers crossed that he gets a full night of sleep tonight so Mama and Papa can too.

Tomorrow we take a day trip to the coast of Alkmar to visit Anke and her daughter.

Fire truck socks to the rescue!!

Brandon just loves these socks, they are sort of 3-D.  He kept touching them and trying to get closer to them it was the cutest thing ever!

Brandon's luggage

I am in love with this little rolling luggage SAMMIES by Samsonite.  I love the name tag in the crocodiles mouth and that the tail is a side pocket.  Not to mention the inside has plenty of room for all the things little boys need.  It will come to great use on trips to Grandma & Grandpa Kelly's and Grandma & Grandpa Gallagher's!

Telogen effluvium

Well today I'm here to spread knowledge about Telogen effluvium.  This is the excessive shedding of hair that occurs one to five months following pregnancy. This is not uncommon, affecting somewhere between 40 to 50% of women; but like most changes during pregnancy, it is temporary. Approximately 90% of your hair is growing at any one time, while the other 10% enter a resting phase. Every two to three months the resting hair falls out and allows new hair to grow in its place.
But when you are pregnant the rise in hormones keeps nearly all your hair in the growing phase, that is why pregnant women have luxurious shiny hair.  After delivery, the hormones return to normal levels, which allows the hair to fall out and return to the normal cycle. The normal hair loss that was delayed during pregnancy may fall out all at once.
Up to 60% of your hair that is in the growth state may enter into the telogen resting state. The hair loss usually peaks 3-4 months after delivery as your hair follicles rejuvenate themselves. As noted before, this hair loss is temporary and hair loss returns to normal within six to twelve months.
For the past 3 weeks I've been experiencing this horrible postpartum hair loss.  I keep debating whether I should just cut my hair short, they say it's less noticeable when you have a short style, with long hair it's just a lot more noticeable.  But the tough part is where to find the time to get a haircut???  I might just have to suck it up and wait.  It's just horrible to clean out my hair brush every night, I miss my thick luxurious hair!

Sleep

Brandon put himself to sleep by covering almost all of his face with blanket. Then refused to let it go so Mommy could relax while he napped instead of worrying about him suffocating .

Before I was a Mom

This is the best Poem.......

"Before I was a Mom I never tripped over toys or forgot words to a lullaby. I didn't worry whether or not my plants were poisonous.  I never thought about immunizations.

Before I was a Mom - I had never been puked on. Pooped on.  Chewed on.  Peed on.  I had complete control of my mind and my thoughts.  I slept all night.

Before I was a Mom I never held down a screaming child so doctors could do tests.  Or give shots.  I never looked into teary eyes and cried.  I never got gloriously happy over a simple grin.  I never sat up late hours at night watching a baby sleep.

Before I was a Mom I never held a sleeping baby just because I didn't want to put them down.  I never felt my heart break into a million pieces when I couldn't stop the hurt.  I never knew that something so small could affect my life so much.  I never knew that I could love someone so much.  I never knew I would love being a Mom.

Before I was a Mom - I didn't know the feeling of having my heart outside my body.  I didn't know how special it could feel to feed a hungry baby.  I didn't know that bond between a mother and her child.  I didn't know that something so small could make me feel so important and happy.

Before I was a Mom - I had never gotten up in the middle of the night every 10 minutes to make sure all was okay.  I had never known the warmth, the joy, the love, the heartache, the wonderment or the satisfaction of being a Mom.  I didn't know I was capable of feeling so much before I was a Mom."

The Brandon train

Choo Choo!!

Sitting up

Brandon would just not sit back this morning, this is the first time he's ever done this

Hangin' out on Mommy

Oh boy this past week has been jam packed with singing, moving stuff, selling our belongings and just daily chores (shopping, cooking, cleaning, ect ect) Oh and Brandon has decided that he wants to be held or have me staring at him for 75% of his day, the other 25% he is sleeping (thank goodness I can get something done during this time).  But this boy has just not been himself all week. I blame teething, the parenting books tell me I'm allowed to blame teething on this personality change too! Today my sweet, smiley, goofy baby has returned to me!!
