Yesterday was a pretty quiet day for Peter. He got some medicine for his sensitive tummy so he wouldn't throw up, this seemed to work very well. They started his compressed feedings, 60ml of formula over 2 hours then the machine is turned off for 1 hour. We were a bit nervous about this but Peter was a trooper with the higher intake and compressed feedings. If things go well tomorrow they will compress the feedings even more and give him longer stretches of break time. He also is working more with the speech therapist on taking a bottle, he is an expert pacifier sucker so he's had no problem sucking on a bottle. I spoke with one of the therapists yesterday and they said he could eventually breastfeed, they are working with him right now to make sure the breathing tubes, he had after the operation didn't give him a gag reflex.
So since Peter was having an awesome day it was only appropriate for my other child to get sick. He had just a cold, or so I thought. In the afternoon he began wheezing and working very hard to breath. He had something wrong so I called the pediatrician and they told me to bring him in at 6pm, but if it got worse to just come ASAP. Brandon's breathing was getting heavier and more wheezy, so I stopped everything and got him to the office. They agreed his breathing was very bad and they had to rule out a respiratory system virus or asthma, it was neither in the end. Well after a breathing treatment with a nebulizer (more like a torture session for ten minutes, I needed the nurse to hold his arms down while I pinned Brandon to my lap and held his head) he started breathing easier, I wish I could say I was better, I broke down crying to the nurses a couple times. But after Brandon calmed down his breathing was heavy, but not wheezy. The office sent me home with a nebulizer machine, some sample medicine so I wouldn't have to stop at the pharmacy, and a follow up appointment tomorrow afternoon.
Paul did the treatments while Brandon slept. He just had to hold the mask over his face for 10 minutes every 4 hours. 10pm and 2am were fine, but 6am I had to help hold him down. I've decided unless his breathing is really bad I'll wait until his 3pm appointment to give him another one, I have no clue how go give him a treatment alone, he won't sit still.
This morning Brandon's breathing was 1000 times better this morning. He sounds flemmy and his cough has broken up so I think the nebulizer treatments worked. From what I read I think Brandon's cold got into his respiratory system, the nurse said it's a good thing I brought him in because his wheezing could have gotten worse and harder to control if I waited a day or so to bring in him. I know the wheezing only started Tuesday morning, but I feel horrible that I brushed it off until 4:30pm while I worried about Peter, I also was freaking out that I might have exposed Peter to what brandon has, but Peter's nurse said unless Brandon and PJ shared drinks or food he will be fine, but to keep him away from the hospital until he is better.
Today I am staying home with Brandon for the day and I'll see Peter at night. But me being neurotic I'll be calling Peter's nurse every hour for an update until I can go visit him tonight.
