Well it's been tough to blog these past few days because Paul and I have been at the hospital taking care of Peter round the clock to try and push him for discharge. Since the feeding tube has come out Peters weight was dipping down by 1oz per day, but finally Saturday he stopped dipping and maintained the same weight as the day before. So last night I stayed with Peter and made our goal to feed every 2 hours as much as he would allow me to put in him without spitting up. I was so nervous he was going to stay the same weight or loose weight. I asked his nurse of we could have an unofficial weigh in for my own sanity. I just couldn't wait until 4:30am monday morning. To our luck he had already gained nearly a whole ounce. By the time 4:30am came around I was so exhausted from feeding, pumping, and our new loud roommates (a 1 year old screaming in terror all night and when not screaming his parents were snoring so loud). But Peter amazed us and gained almost 3 ounces in 1 day! GO PETER! This is all we needed him to do in order to come home! Waiting for the doctors to come in and agree was torture. Around 11:30am when they still didn't round we asked the nurse to page Peters cardiologist so we didn't have to wait all afternoon. We did have Brandon with us and he was a big mr. cranky pants by 11:00am. I took Brandon to the cafeteria for some lunch and like clck work the doctor showed up while I was out, but Paul got him to take a look at Peter to give the sign off that he can come home. Walking back from the cafeteria Paul texted me saying we can take him home. I broke into tear/ started racing Brandon back to the room. 2 1/2 hours later after lots of paper work was signed, a nutriionist taught me how to make his formula, the nurses stocked us up on 2 cases of his formula (more than enough for the last week he will be on it), we collected my breast milk that was being stored in the NICU, PICU, and pediatric wing (1 month supply has taken over our freezer, it's pretty amazing, but I've been working really hard to keep my supply up for when he can begin to breastfeed). The hospital also got us all Peter's medications for the next 24 hours and filled all his perscriptioms at their in hospital pharmacy, we only had to wait over night for an infant prevacid that is only made overnight at our local pharmacy, but we had enough to get him through the night.
Driving home with Peter in that back next to Brandon was surreal. Paul and I had to drive separately because once I decided I wasn't leaving the hospital until he came home the car never left the hospital garage.
Being home is the best feeling in the world. I think Peter will sleep much better without nurses, doctors, and techs poking him every hour. Now he just has to worry about Brandon poking him, but so far he's been an amazing big brother!
We are so proud of how strong our newborn baby is, now we look forward to watching him grow and fattening him up!
